Saturday Social
Every Saturday, 2pm - 4pm
by the fountain, Market Square
(till December 1st)
Some of you probably haven't heard about this "Saturday Social". Few volunteers and I started a experimental social group on every Saturday in the past Winter and Spring, ended the group on July 1st. We meet in a circle by the fountain in Market Square. The social group was a big success. We had about 25 people as our regular attendance. Some of them came to the group every week, and some of them came to the group every two weeks. Most of them asked their friends come with them. We didn't put this group in a big exposure to the public, but some people probably have already read about the group from the article on the Telegraph Journal in May.
It became a great way that we can introduce new volunteers, fresh newcomers, and new community partners to actually sit down and chat about life in Saint John. There are many more beneficial outcomes form this group as well. It helps multicultural newcomers to share their personal stories, to support and provide some good ideas, and to generate a sense of home belonging to each other within the ethno-cultural groups. It is also a great way for us to introduce locals to meet with people from multicultural groups, who are new or old to Saint John, but have different perspectives about the city, and are willing to share their knowledge and skills from around globe to Saint Johners.
If you are a person, who have never traveled to anywhere outside of Canada. This group of people will give you a free interpretation of what is like being in another country. The experience is free and rather enjoyable.
I strongly encourage you to participate this "Saturday Social", if you can, please bring a friend with you, and you don't have to come in every week, and you don't have to stay for the whole two hours. Just come and share with us on what you know about Saint John, New Brunswick, and Canada.
