Winter driving safety tips

01/12/2011

New Brunswickers are reminded to take precautions when driving in winter weather.

Snow and ice conditions can lead to slippery roads and reduced visibility, increasing the risk of vehicle collisions.

We encourage motorists to be cautious when driving this winter, Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Robert Trevors said. We all have a responsibility to make sensible choices for driving in winter, including what tires to use, and when to drive and when to stay home.

The following tips are recommended for safe winter driving:

걶    if possible, install four snow tires. It is the safest option;

걶    before you leave your driveway, scrape the ice and snow from every window and from the exterior rearview mirrors;

걶    reduce your speed and increase following distance in slippery conditions and use your brakes lightly;

걶    never drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs or fatigue;

걶    keep your gas tank at least half-full. The extra volume can help reduce moisture problems within your fuel system, and it also adds helpful weight to your vehicle; and

걶    carry warm clothes and an emergency kit in case you are stalled or have a collision.
