Maclean뭆 ranks unb first in its category for student-to-faculty ratio and library investments

11/16/2009

The University of New Brunswick ranked first among comprehensive universities in Canada for its student-to-faculty ratio and library holdings per student, and third in its category for the number of students to win national awards, in the Maclean뭩 magazine annual university rankings released Nov. 5, 2009.

UNB placed sixth overall within its category of 11 national-caliber comprehensive universities, after having tied for fifth place last year. UNB is one of two Atlantic Canadian universities on this list.

Comprehensive universities are described by Maclean뭩 as having a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degrees.

We are happy to see UNB top the list in our category for student access to full-time faculty, said Eddy Campbell, UNB president. We are also pleased to achieve top status in library holdings per student, and to see our students compete so effectively with students across Canada in winning national awards. This indicates a strong learning environment at UNB.

These rankings are important to UNB, and we take them into account along with direct student feedback and other indicators of success, added Dr. Campbell. We are in the process of determining the actions we should take to continue to enhance the overall student experience.

Dr. Campbell, who became UNB뭩 18th president and vice-chancellor in September 2009, is leading a university-wide strategic planning process that will focus on: enhancing student success; fostering research and graduate studies; building a better UNB; and building a better province.

UNB also ranked favourably in the recent Globe and Mail University Report, achieving an A- in the Most Satisfied Students category for small universities. Furthermore, UNB recently received a grade of B in the 2010 Green Report Card, issued by the Sustainable Endowments Institute in the United States. This represents a full grade higher than last year.

Established in 1785, UNB is one of the oldest public universities in North America. With more than 12,500 students from more than 100 countries, UNB has the best student-to-faculty ratio of Canada뭩 comprehensive universities, according to Maclean뭩 magazine. As the largest research institution in New Brunswick, UNB conducts over 75 per cent of the provinces university research. The university has more than 3,500 faculty and staff, and an annual operating budget of more than $160 million. UNB뭩 two main campuses are located in Fredericton and Saint John, New Brunswick.
