10/19/2009

The Universit de Moncton will receive a grant of $6.6 million from the New Brunswick government to provide for the expansion of rooms used for medical training in French in New Brunswick.

The announcement was made today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault.

I am pleased that our government is contributing to the maintenance and growth of the health programs at the Universit de Moncton, as detailed in Be Inspired. Be Ready. Be Better. The Action Plan to Transform Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick, said Arseneault. As a partner in offering the only medical training program in French in Atlantic Canada, the Universit de Moncton plays a leading role in the education and training of francophone health-care professionals.

The Universit de Moncton will receive $2.2 million per year for the next three years to expand the J.-Raymond-Frenette building. The training program is offered in the province by the Universit de Sherbrooke, Que., in conjunction with the Universit de Moncton.

This project is the culmination of planning and discussions leading to the addition of about 1,770 square metres to the Raymond-J.-Frenette building, said Yvon Fontaine,Universit de Moncton president. Since health is a focus of development at the Universit de Moncton, todays announcement will enable us to pursue that momentum. This project shows the joint commitment of the Universit de Moncton and the Province of New Brunswick to medical training in French here at home.

To meet the current and future demand for health-care professionals in the province, the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour and the Department of Health are working together to offer training opportunities in key health sectors.

This new medical school will assist us in our recruitment and retention efforts by allowing potential New Brunswick doctors to train and practise right here in New Brunswick, said Health Minister Mary Schryer.
